All Ords posts solid 1.13% gain; volume above average and breadth favours the gainers by 2:1: sector indices mixed. The NZSE50 closed with a gain of 0.1% for the day. In Japan, the Nikkei225 has added 1.2% so far; Hong Kong's Hang Seng is showing a 0.8% gain.The KOSPI has added 0.5% for the session thus far.

 

Major Market Indices

The broad market – the All Ordinaries (XAO) – rose strongly, registering a gain of 52.9 points (1.13%), finishing at 4739.4 points. The index hit an intraday high of 4767.1 at 10:17 am, while the low for the day was 4686.5 – set at 10:00 am Sydney time.

Total volume traded on the ASX was 2.46bn units, 18.6% above its 10-day average of 2.08bn shares.The ASX's daily listing of all stocks included 1340 different 3-letter FPO's which traded (i.e., had non-zero trade volume). Of these, 639 issues rose, with volume in rising issues totalling 1.27bn units; there were 406 declining stocks, which traded aggregate declining volume of 705.4m shares.

Of the 501 All Ordinaries components, 295 rose while 123 fell. Volume was tilted in favour of the gainers by a margin of 2:1, with 825.61m shares traded in gainers while 419.65m shares traded in the day's losers.

The Index that forms the cash basis for the SPI Futures – the S&P/ASX 200 (XJO) – managed a solid gain, adding 53.2 points (1.14%), closing out the session at 4728.1 points.

Among the 20 big guns, 17 index components finished to the upside, and 4 lost ground. The stocks which make up the index traded a total of 166.71m units; 17 index components rose, with rising volume amounting to 145.66m shares, while the 4 decliners had volume traded totalling 21.05m units. The major percentage gainers within the index were

  • AMP Ltd (AMP), +$0.24 (3.92%) to $6.36 on volume of 40.7 million shares;
  • Suncorp-Metway Ltd (SUN), +$0.33 (3.74%) to $9.15 on volume of 4.5 million shares;
  • Stockland (SGP), +$0.13 (3.53%) to $3.81 on volume of 7.9 million shares;
  • Fosters Group Ltd (FGL), +$0.17 (3.14%) to $5.58 on volume of 12.1 million shares; and
  • Wesfarmers Ltd (WES), +$0.80 (3%) to $27.49 on volume of 2.9 million shares.

On the less salubrious side of the big-cap fence, the following stocks were the worst-performed within the index:

  • Westfield Group (WDC), -$0.22 (1.78%) to $12.12 on volume of 11.4 million shares;
  • Brambles Industries Ltd (BXB), -$0.12 (1.67%) to $7.06 on volume of 3.9 million shares;
  • QBE Insurance Group Ltd (QBE), -$0.03 (0.13%) to $22.50 on volume of 3.7 million shares; and
  • Newcrest Mining Ltd (NCM), -$0.04 (0.11%) to $35.26 on volume of 2 million shares.

The ASX Small Ordinaries (XSO) The small end of the market had a somewhat better day than its large-cap counterpart. The Small Ords performed solidly, in moving up 31.5 points (1.25%), closing out the session at 2549.3 points.

Among the stocks that make up the Small Caps index, 153 index components finished to the upside, and of the rest, 57 closed lower for the session.

The 235 stocks which make up the index traded a total of 731.84m units: volume in the 153 gainers totalling 379.45m shares, with trade totalling 184.81m units in the index's 57 declining components. The major percentage gainers within the index were
